How to decide period and group of an element,
which is given in the form of electronic configuration:
We know the
electronic configuration can be written as three types. They are,
1. In the full form (Normal form or nlx form): Mg: 12- 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 Na: 11- 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s1 Cl: 17- 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p5
2. In the Short
form with noble gas formula: Mg: 12- [Ne] 3s2      Na: 11- [Ne] 3s1      Cl:
17- [Ne] 3s2 3p5             Li: 3- [He] 2s1
(In this we replace the previous inert gas
electronic configuration with its formula in [     ] type of brackets. This is not used for noble gases)
3. In the very
short form with Arabic numbers: Mg: 12- 2, 8, 2     Na:
11- 2, 8, 1      O: 8- 2, 6    N: 7- 2, 5
(In this form we write the
Arabic numericals of the number of electrons present in the order of orbits.)
Let us understand how to know Period and Group of a given electronic configuration?
